If you want to re-arrange your categories, for example, to sort them, make one category to be subcategory, etc, it is possible to do this on the "Catalog → Categories" page.  Just drag-n-drop categories in the left column to arrange them as you want.

How can I set category description

You can add description for each of your category in UXi® Commerce control panel → Catalog → Categories. Select the category what you want to add description just clicking on it in the list. After that category info like name, image, status and description will appear in the right part of the page.

You may notice that it is not just text area, but a WYSIWYG editor, which allows you not only add the common text, but also format it in the convenient way like in the text editor.

Using it you can make paragraphs, add images, change color, size and font of the text etc. In other words you don't need to know HTML for creating description with styles you want to.

If you want to set category description using HTML tags you just need to click small "HTML" button in top right corner of WYSIWIG editor and pop-up window with source HTML code will appear. The code in this window can be changed according to your needs.

This feature is extremely useful if you want to make your category pages more appealing, which can lead to more sales. For example you can add a general description of a categories products or a graphic banner, promoting a special product or highlight some featured products (two products below the “This Weeks Featured Specials” header are added using a category description). Using this feature your category pages will look better than ever.

    Hidden products and categories

UXi® Commerce doesn't have a built-in tool to create a hidden product or category. I.e. a product or category which doesn't appear in the usual list, but can be opened/purchased using a special direct link.

However, you can create such a product or category using a special trick: all enabled products and categories which belong to the disabled category don't appear in the product browser, but still can be opened using the direct link.

So, how you can create a hidden product:

    • Create a new root category, call it "Special products", for example.
    • Disable it.
    • Move your product to this disabled category. You can do it using the "Catalog → Categories → Category Products" tab or "Categories" section in the product details. Make sure that this product is enabled.
    • That's all, now this product is hidden. You cannot open it by browsing categories in your store, but you can still open it using a direct link (how to get such a link).

The same instruction will work for categories too. In this case you need to make your enabled category a child of a disabled one.

    Important notes:

    • such hidden products will still appear in the search results provided by the UXi® Commerce search widgets. If you don't like this, don't use the search widget.
    • if you make a hidden category, then the disabled parent category will still appear in the breadcrumbs. If a customer clicks it, he/she will be redirected to the home store page. So if you don't like this behaviour,  you may want to hide the breadcrumbs.
    • you can use this option to open a hidden enabled category on a particular page: Default category for product browser

    How you can use this.

    Discounts and Wholesale products.

You can create special products with discounts or for your wholesale customers. Usual customers will not see these products, but the customers with a special link or access to a password-protected page, will be able to purchase it.

    Filters.

You can create special categories to filter your products by parameters, for example, by price: "$0-$10", "$10-$100", "$100+" or by brand.

Since each UXi® Commerce product can be assigned to more than one category, it can be located in the main category and in many "special" ones. You may want not to show these special categories with the main ones, so you can hide them there and put links to them on your site manually.

    Different categories for different sites

If you have many sites, you may want to show different UXi® Commerce categories on different sites. For example, if you sell laptops, you may want to show the "Apple" category on the site about Apple, Dell laptops on your site about Dell and so on. At the same time you want to manage all sales and products in one place and use one UXi® Commerce account.

    How to do this:

    • Create a disabled root category. So, the only root category in your store will be a disabled one.
    • Create enabled categories in the disabled one. One enabled category per each site. Let's call them "site categories".
    • Move your product categories to the corresponding site categories.
    • Hide your breadcrumbs. You need to hide them, because the link to the disabled category in the breadcrumbs will point to the root store page, which will not have any enabled categories in your case.
    • Then use this option to open a particular site category on each site: Default category for product browser

NOTE: this workaround for creating multiple storefronts with different products has some drawbacks you should keep in mind:

    • The categories menu widgets (horizontal categories and vertical categories) will display no category since the only root category is disabled
    • The search widget in UXi® Commerce always searches all store products - you cannot restrict it to specific category. So, to prevent appearing one category products in another category's "storefront" you will have to disable UXi® Commerce search box on your site

    Additional Notes

How to choose a hidden category for a Facebook store

You can use the hidden categories with your Facebook store, but in order to actually select the hidden category you will need to follow these steps:

    1. Temporarily enable the upper one disabled category (the one that does actual hiding)
    2. Go to the store settings for your Facebook business page here https://apps.facebook.com/ecwid-shop
    3. In the "Facebook Tab content" choose "Catalog. Category opened by default" and choose the necessary category from the dropdown. Save the changes.
    4. Disable the category you enabled at step 1.

Important note: If you show random products in a page tab instead of your catalog, then your "hidden" products may be shown among those random products. Since our Facebook app picks random products out of all available items. We would rather recommend to show a particular category in your Facebook page tab, as described above.

    Default category for product browser

By default, the Product Browser widget opens with a list of root category. But you can configure it to show a different category when user opens it for the first time.

You can do it by adding the following option to the Product Browser integration code:

    defaultCategoryId=%categoryId%

    ECWID Example

This code will open UXi® Commerce Demo shop with default view (list of categories):

    <div> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://app.ecwid.com/script.js?1003'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> xProductBrowser("categoriesPerRow=3","views=grid(3,3) list(10) table(20)","categoryView=grid","searchView=list","style="); </script> </div>

... but this code will open the iGoods category of Ecwid Demo:

    <div> <script type='text/javascript' src='http://app.ecwid.com/script.js?1003'></script> <script type='text/javascript'> xProductBrowser("categoriesPerRow=3","views=grid(3,3) list(10) table(20)","categoryView=grid","searchView=list","style=","defaultCategoryId=3003"); </script> </div>

3003 is the CategoryID of "iGoods" category. (How to get ID of your product or category)

Where exactly to apply the above changes?

The changes above are meant to be applied to the embed code that you use on your web page to display the UXi® Commerce store. However, sometimes it may be difficult for the store owner to locate that code.

There are 2 principal ways to embed an UXi® Commerce storefront into a webpage:

    1. By copying and pasting an embed code provided in the Dashboard page of UXi® Commerce control panel. If you have embedded your store this way, then the changes need to be applied to that code in the source code of your store page
    2. By using a plugin to a CMS or the social network app. If you use Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal or other CMS and embed your UXi® Commerce store by installing a plugin or if you have opened your UXi® Commerce store on Facebook or other social networks using our official app, then you don't need to change the embed code. The settings page of those plugins allow you to set the default category easily, without any coding.

Now, to the tricks you can do with it.

    Use #1:

Instead of showing the list of categories as big icons, you can have your store open a particular category by default, and resort to using the categories widget for navigating the categories. This is particularly useful if you don't have icons for categories.

    Use #2:

You can design your own categories navigation instead of UXi® Commerce Categories widget. You can even your existing CMS menu to navigate categories.

    Here's how to do that:

    1. Do not add Categories widget to your site.
    2. In your CMS, create a separate page for each category you use.
    3. Add Product Browser widget for every page created in step 2. By specifying different defaultCategoryId for each of these browsers, you will make UXi® Commerce switch category when your customers click your main menu.

You can also have different design for these pages by using the standard features of your CMS.

    Use #3:

You can create a custom splash page that displays categories in a way alternative to UXi® Commerce defaults.

How to use animated GIFs for your images

    Product images

You can use animated GIFs as your main product image without any issues.

    Product and category thumbnails

When you upload a new product or a category image, UXi® Commerce creates a new thumbnail on its basis. If the "main" product image is bigger than your thumbnails, it will be resized. If it is smaller, it will be saved unchanged.

When you upload a GIF image, UXi® Commerce creates its thumbnail in JPEG format. JPEG files don't support animation, so thumbnails don't have it either.

So in order to use animated GIFs for your product and category thumbnails, your product images which you upload should have the same size as your thumbnails.

    • Log in to your UXi® Commerce control panel and open the "System Settings → Design → Thumbnail Sizes" page.
    • Increase your thumbnails` size to 240px, for example.
    • Then try to upload your animated GIF which should be equal to or less than 240px and check the thumbnail.
